Mission/ Vision:

Our vision is to improve mental health care in our community and to enhance the development and well-being of our trainees and faculty, We aim to achieve this by training well-rounded and clinically exceptional psychiatrists who can serve patients and become the professionals they strive to be.

Our mission encompasses promoting the highest quality care for individuals with mental disorders and their families. We support mental health promotion and prevention, foster a learning environment through psychiatric education and research, and represent the psychiatry profession. Collaboration, network development, and the creation of innovative service delivery models are central to our approach. Additionally, we strive to integrate mental health care with overall health care and work diligently to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.

 

Objectives of the Department:

1 .Undergraduate teaching and training in psychiatry aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for diagnosing and treating common psychiatric disorders, handling emergencies, and referring cases for specialized care when needed.

2.Postgraduate training focuses on integrating medical knowledge, clinical skills, and professional attitudes to deliver patient-centered care across diverse ages and settings, including inpatient, outpatient, and community environment.

3.Foster responsible professionalism through mentorship.

4. Strive to provide affordable and comprehensive mental health care for all, emphasizing equality.

5. Engage in quality research in clinical psychiatry and collaborate in basic neuroscience research across disciplines.

6. Deliver high-quality training programs in psychiatry and mental Health

7.Advocate for evidence-based healthcare provision.

About the Psychiatry Department

 

Dr Bhuvaneshwari was first Head of the department and it was under his visionary leadership that the foundation for the growth of the Department was laid. Subsequently the Department evolved and expanded under the able leadership of Dr Umashankar M. The Postgraduate Residency (MD) programme was started in 2017 and the current intake of postgraduate residents is three per year.

The department runs several specialised services for Deaddiction services . Recently, it has also started a OST clinic . The Department is actively involved in multidisciplinary clinical care and training, as well as research both at the intra-departmental level and in liaison with other disciplines.

Encouraged under graduates and postgraduates and various faculty from other specialities in various awareness activities and academic activities in the field of psychiatry in order to create awareness and reduce the stigma.

Services

The Services are mainly divided into outpatient, inpatient.

The outpatient services are housed in the first floor of the OPD block no 71, 72. The outpatient department sees a daily footfall of 30-60 patients. The Department also caters to the needs of special populations through a range of specialty clinics . Recently have started a nodal center of OST clinic.

Services Provided

The Services are mainly divided into outpatient, inpatient.

The Department also caters to the needs of special populations through a range of specialty clinics . Recently have started a nodal centre of OST clinic.

Quality inpatient services are provided in the 30-bedded inpatient unit located in IP Block on the second floor of the hospital block. Dedicated beds are available for de-addiction service. Daily rounds are conducted where faculty, residents and support staff participate in discussing and deciding the ongoing management of admitted patients.

The Department provides round the clock consultation-liaison psychiatry (CLP) services to address psychiatric issues in patients who are medically ill and provide prompt opinions on departmental cross-referrals. A 3-tier model consisting of junior resident, senior resident and consultant on call is followed to handle these services on a rotational basis.
